Quit a job at a major oil company to become an Indian Army officer—meet Athira Suresh.

Success Story: Working for ExxonMobil—one of the world’s largest oil companies—is a dream for many, yet even that ambition pales in comparison to the allure of the Indian Army’s uniform. Athira Suresh, a native of Calicut, Kerala, exemplifies this; she proved that when one’s resolve is strong, the path of serving the nation stands above all else. After clearing the IIT-JEE exam, Athira graduated in Civil Engineering from NIT Calicut. She subsequently began her career at ExxonMobil, a giant in the energy and petroleum sector.

Choosing the Military Uniform: Following in Her Father’s Footsteps

PRO Defence Prayagraj shared in a social media post that Athira had always dreamed of serving the country. Inspired by her father, Suresh—who serves as a Naik in the Corps of Signals—she decided to leave her job at ExxonMobil to join the Army.

Cleared the SSB Exam on the First Attempt

Driven by sheer willpower, Athira cleared the rigorous Services Selection Board (SSB) examination on her very first attempt. She then completed demanding and challenging military training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Gaya.

OTA Gaya Passing-Out Parade

The passing-out parade took place on September 5, 2026, at the Officers Training Academy in Gaya, Bihar. The nation gained 253 new military officers as a result. Among them, 218 officer cadets from the Short Service Commission (Technical Entry) Men-65 course and 35 from the SSC (Technical) Women-36 course joined the Indian Army.

A Remarkable Journey: From Blueprints to the Battlefield

At the OTA Gaya passing-out parade, Athira Suresh was officially commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army. She has traversed an extraordinary journey—transitioning from creating civil engineering blueprints to donning the military uniform in service of the nation’s defense.
