Do you also wear shoes inside the house? Find out how this can affect your family’s health.

New Delhi: When you return home from outside, do you take off your shoes before entering, or do you walk around the house wearing them? This small habit can significantly impact your health and that of your family. According to experts, the soles of shoes—having traversed outdoor ground, roads, and public spaces—can pick up various types of bacteria, dirt, and harmful chemicals, which are then carried into the home.

Bacteria Lurk on Shoe Soles

Research has revealed that fecal bacteria can often be found on the undersides of shoes. These bacteria typically make their way into homes via shoes after contact with public restrooms, streets, and unsanitary surfaces. Additionally, bacteria present in animal waste—such as that from dogs and birds—can adhere to shoe soles.

The risk of infection spreading via shoes is even higher in environments like hospitals. Some studies have detected antibiotic-resistant bacteria and gut-related bacteria on the shoes of medical professionals.

Infection Can Spread on Floors and Carpets

One study analyzed samples taken from sidewalks, shoe soles, and building floors. It found that many bacteria present on outdoor surfaces can be carried indoors on shoes. Such bacteria can persist for longer periods, particularly in carpeted areas.

Chemicals Can Enter the Home via Shoes

It is not just bacteria; various harmful chemicals can also enter the home through shoes. These include substances like PFAS, which can persist in the environment and the human body for extended periods. Furthermore, dust from construction or repair work, lead particles, and agricultural pesticides can also be tracked into the house on the soles of shoes. Adopt the habit of taking off shoes at home.

Health experts believe that removing shoes before entering the house can be a good habit. In many countries, people have made this a part of their daily routine. Taking off shoes outside can be a simple precautionary measure to keep the floors clean and protect the family from unwanted infections.
