PDS Ration System: A major change has been introduced in the process for ration card holders to collect their rations. Beneficiaries will no longer be denied rations if their fingerprints fail to match at the ration shop. The government implemented a face authentication facility within the ration distribution system (ePDS) starting October 1st. Under this system, if fingerprint-based identification fails, the beneficiary can be verified using facial recognition.
The government officially announced this new system on September 29th. Its objective is to simplify the ration distribution process while making beneficiary identification more convenient and transparent.
Face Verification via Aadhaar Database
Until now, beneficiaries had to undergo biometric verification by placing their thumb or finger on the e-POS machine at the ration shop to collect rations. Often, fingerprint matching failed due to network issues, technical glitches, or unclear fingerprints.
Under the new system, if such a situation arises, the beneficiary’s face will be scanned using the e-POS machine’s camera. Identity verification will then be conducted based on information available in the Aadhaar database, and the eligible beneficiary will receive their ration.
Benefit for the Elderly and Laborers
The face authentication facility is expected to provide relief, particularly to those whose fingerprints are difficult to scan. Many elderly individuals have faint fingerprints due to aging. Similarly, the fingerprints of laborers engaged in manual work often fail to register correctly on the machines.
In such cases, facial recognition will simplify the process of collecting rations.
Technical Updates to e-POS Machines
To implement this new facility, necessary software updates are being made to the e-POS machines and associated systems used at ration shops. However, the face authentication facility will only be available at ration shops where the machine has been equipped with a camera and the necessary technical updates have been activated. What is ePDS?
ePDS, or the Electronic Public Distribution System, is a digital system used to manage data related to ration cardholders and beneficiaries, as well as the processes of ration distribution and verification, online.
The face authentication facility is part of this digital system. Its objective is to provide beneficiaries with an alternative identification process when issues arise with fingerprint verification, ensuring that eligible individuals face no difficulty in obtaining their rations.
