Captain Smit Machchhar: A margin of just 30 seconds, 174 lives at stake; how Captain Smit Machchhar averted an air disaster despite suffering serious injuries.

Captain Smit Machchhar: A critical crisis unfolded during Flydubai flight FZ1073, endangering the lives of the 174 passengers on board. Despite sustaining severe injuries, Indian pilot Smit Machchhar fought to maintain control of the aircraft from the cockpit and played a pivotal role in managing the situation. His bravery was lauded by many, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Struggle Begins at 33,000 Feet

According to reports, the Flydubai flight, en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv, had reached an altitude of approximately 33,000 feet after takeoff. At this point, the Omani co-pilot attempted to take control of the aircraft.

As the situation escalated, a struggle broke out between the two pilots inside the cockpit. During the altercation, Smit Machchhar was reportedly stabbed multiple times, leaving him critically injured. Despite this, he continued his efforts to prevent the other pilot from seizing control of the aircraft.

During the struggle, the aircraft plummeted 17,000 feet in about 30 seconds. The sudden descent caused panic among the passengers. Amidst the conflict in the cockpit, Smit Machchhar persisted in his efforts to prevent the plane from crashing.

Confusion Caused by Squawk Codes 7700 and 7500

During the emergency, Squawk codes 7700 and subsequently 7500 were transmitted from the aircraft to Air Traffic Control. In aviation, code 7700 signals a general emergency, whereas code 7500 is used to indicate a situation such as a hijacking.

The transmission of these codes initially led to reports that the flight had been hijacked. However, subsequent events revealed that a serious struggle was unfolding inside the cockpit.

Passengers also stepped in to help.

Referring to the incident, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cited a conversation with a passenger. According to the passenger, the plane suddenly began to spin and descend rapidly.

The passenger recounted how he managed to reach the cockpit with a crew member. Together, they attempted to subdue the co-pilot, who was accused of attacking with a knife and damaging the aircraft’s systems.

The plane subsequently made a safe landing. This incident highlighted the crisis that arose during the flight and the role played by the pilot and crew in managing the situation.
