Indian Railways has established specific rules for the advance booking of train tickets to facilitate travel for passengers. While the standard advance reservation period for general passengers is 60 days, certain categories of travelers are granted the facility to book tickets much further in advance. This includes foreign tourists and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), who, subject to certain conditions, are permitted to reserve tickets up to 365 days before their date of travel.
Who is eligible to book tickets 365 days in advance?
This special facility is not intended for general passengers. It is available to foreign tourists and NRIs who wish to plan their travel in India well in advance. Under this arrangement, eligible passengers can book their train tickets significantly earlier than the standard advance reservation period.
Conditions for booking tickets
To avail of this facility, passengers must adhere to specific requirements. Providing details from a valid foreign passport is mandatory during the booking process. Additionally, for registration on the IRCTC portal or for booking tickets, an international mobile number may be required, which will be verified via an OTP (One-Time Password).
However, this facility is not available for all trains or all travel classes. Depending on availability and the applicable regulations, it can only be utilized for select premium classes, including First AC, Second AC, and Executive Class.
Why was this facility introduced?
Foreign tourists often plan their trips to India many months in advance. Consequently, it is essential to ensure that train tickets are available to them well ahead of time. With this objective, Indian Railways introduced an extended advance booking window for foreign tourists in 2017, helping them plan their journeys more effectively.
Note: Before booking tickets, please verify the applicable rules, eligibility criteria, and seat availability for the specific train on the official IRCTC or Indian Railways portal.
