China responds positively to Trump’s remarks on Taiwan

China appears pleased with US President Donald Trump’s softening stand on Taiwan’s independence after his recent visit to Beijing.

After concluding his state visit to China, Trump on Friday struck an ambivalent note on the issue of Taiwan. He told Fox News that the US is not looking to have someone say, “let’s go independent because the United States is backing us”.

The American leader also sounded uncertain about approving a $11 billion weapons package for Taiwan. Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Monday that Beijing has taken note of President Trump’s latest remarks on Taiwan.

“Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory; it has never been a country, and will never be one in the future,” Guo said at a news briefing when asked to comment on Trump’s remarks.
