During the conversation, it was revealed that a disagreement over a film’s release date, coupled with a specific comment made by Varun Dhawan, had upset Karan Johar. Janhvi also shared that the breakdown in communication with Karan had an emotional impact on her.
Why was Karan Johar upset with Varun Dhawan?
On the show, Varun Dhawan mentioned that Karan Johar had suddenly stopped speaking to him. According to Varun, he didn’t initially realize that Karan was upset with him, whereas Janhvi was aware of it.
Janhvi reminded Varun that he had referred to Karan as a ‘child.’ Defending his remark, Varun stated that he still feels there was no reason for Karan to be offended by it.
A film’s release date became the cause of the rift
Karan Johar explained that the conflict stemmed from a film’s release date. According to him, one of Varun Dhawan’s films was scheduled for release on the same date as his own film, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.’
Karan shared that he was already stressed about finalizing the right release date for his film, so when it appeared that Varun’s film would also be released on that same day, he felt hurt.
Offering an explanation, Varun claimed that he had informed Karan in advance that his film might be released on that date. However, Karan maintained that Varun had only mentioned it as a possibility, and the situation regarding the release date had not been clearly defined.
A message saying ‘stop behaving like a child’ fueled the resentment
Karan Johar revealed that following the dispute over the release date, he stopped responding to Varun’s calls and messages. He was most hurt when Varun sent him a message asking him to stop behaving like a child.
In response, Varun explained that he had observed Karan acting in a childlike manner, seemingly in an attempt to appear younger. Karan replied that there are boundaries even in friendship, and that Varun’s comment had deeply hurt him.
Varun clarified that he speaks to his own parents in the same way, and that his relationship with Karan is akin to that of a father and son. However, Karan pointed out that he is not Varun’s parent and did not expect such a remark from him.
Janhvi Kapoor reveals the emotional impact of the rift
On the show, Janhvi Kapoor recalled the period when she and Karan Johar had stopped speaking, sharing that it had caused her great distress. She revealed that during this time, she gained about 6 kilograms, but once they resumed communication, she began to lose that weight.
Hearing this, Karan acknowledged that the rift had been emotionally challenging for him as well, noting that the estrangement between them felt much like a breakup.
