Chest pain after a breakup or major shock? It might not be a heart attack, but ‘Broken Heart Syndrome’.

Broken Heart Syndrome: We often associate a broken heart or a major emotional shock solely with mental and emotional pain. However, in some cases, sudden, intense stress can also affect the heart’s functioning. If chest pain develops shortly after a breakup, the death of a loved one, a major accident, or another severe shock, it should not be dismissed as mere stress or anxiety.

According to doctors, chest pain following emotional stress could signal a heart attack. Alternatively, it could be Takotsubo Syndrome, also known as Broken Heart Syndrome. While the symptoms of both conditions can be quite similar, their underlying causes differ.

What is the difference between a heart attack and Broken Heart Syndrome?

A heart attack typically occurs when there is a blockage in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscles. This prevents a portion of the heart from receiving sufficient oxygen, potentially damaging the heart muscle.

In contrast, Broken Heart Syndrome usually does not involve a blockage in the major coronary arteries. A sudden surge in emotional or physical stress can cause a rapid rise in stress hormone levels, temporarily impairing the heart’s pumping ability.

Symptoms such as chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, and weakness can appear in both conditions. Consequently, it can be difficult to distinguish between a heart attack and Broken Heart Syndrome based solely on symptoms.

How is Broken Heart Syndrome diagnosed?

When chest pain occurs, it is not always possible to differentiate between a heart attack and Broken Heart Syndrome based on blood tests alone. Markers of heart damage, such as troponin, can be elevated in both conditions.

Doctors typically assess the situation using tests like ECGs, blood tests, and heart imaging. Other cardiac tests may also be performed if necessary. Therefore, if sudden chest pain occurs, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention rather than waiting at home or attempting self-treatment by attributing it merely to stress. Higher incidence in post-menopausal women

Broken Heart Syndrome can affect individuals of any age or gender, but it is observed relatively more frequently in post-menopausal women. However, this does not mean that men or younger people are entirely immune to it. Severe emotional or physical stress can impact heart function in anyone.

Don’t dismiss a ‘broken heart’ as merely emotional pain

If symptoms such as chest pain, breathing difficulties, excessive sweating, dizziness, or weakness appear following a breakup or a major shock, they should not be ignored or dismissed as mere anxiety. Whether the underlying cause is a heart attack or Broken Heart Syndrome, timely medical evaluation is essential in both cases.

In the event of sudden or severe chest pain, seeking immediate medical help is the most crucial step, rather than relying on guesswork.
