Cooking is not just a skill but also a workout for the brain! Research reveals a major finding linked to dementia.

People generally consider cooking to be an ordinary chore. However, a recent study has made surprising claims regarding cooking: it can improve mental health. Research indicates that cooking at home at least once a week can reduce the risk of dementia in the elderly by up to 30%. The findings also reveal that for older adults with limited prior cooking experience or skills, this risk reduction could be as high as 70%.

Japanese researchers note that over the past few decades, people have increasingly relied on restaurants, takeaways, and frozen foods rather than cooking at home. For the elderly, however, cooking serves not only as a form of physical activity but also as a mental workout. Researchers selected 10,978 individuals aged 65 and older from the ‘Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study’ and monitored their cognitive health over a six-year period, concluding in 2022.

How cooking protects against dementia:

Cooking requires planning, multitasking, following step-by-step processes, and managing time. These activities enhance the brain’s ability to ward off diseases.

Cooking sharpens the mind while also teaching you how to multitask. You perform several tasks simultaneously while cooking—from chopping and sautéing vegetables to timing the cooking process and managing spice quantities. All these actions foster multitasking skills and provide a significant workout for the brain. 3. Improves mood—

When elderly people cook for themselves, they stay engaged in a productive activity, preventing feelings of uselessness. Cooking together in the kitchen becomes a group activity, which helps improve their mood.

  1. Healthy eating—

Cooking at home not only boosts brain function but also supports overall health and strengthens the digestive system. You consume fresh vegetables prepared at home, avoiding processed foods and items that cause inflammation.
