Does consuming too much sugar affect the liver? Does sugar cause liver inflammation? Find out from a doctor.

In India, festivals are synonymous with sweets, traditional delicacies, and delicious treats. Whether it is Holi or Diwali, people indulge in sweets and exchange them with friends and family. However, excessive sugar consumption can be detrimental to health. In particular, consistently consuming large amounts of sugar can adversely affect the liver.

Consuming small amounts of sweets occasionally rarely harms the liver. Problems arise when there is prolonged consumption of high levels of sugar, sugary beverages, and high-calorie foods. This can lead to issues such as weight gain, insulin resistance, and the accumulation of excess fat in the liver.

How does excessive sugar consumption affect the liver?

The liver plays a crucial role in processing sugar within the body. Fructose, in particular, is primarily metabolized in the liver. Fructose is found in table sugar, sweets, and many sugary beverages.

When the body receives excessive calories and fructose over a prolonged period, the liver may convert a portion of the excess carbohydrates into fat. Over time, this fat can accumulate in liver cells, increasing the risk of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD). This condition was formerly known as Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD).

What happens in the body after consuming excessive sugar?

Sweets and carbohydrate-rich foods are broken down into sugar during digestion and enter the bloodstream. The body uses glucose for energy and can also store it for future use as needed.

In contrast, fructose is primarily metabolized in the liver. Consuming excessive amounts of fructose and calories over time can increase a process called de novo lipogenesis, wherein the liver begins producing fatty acids. Some of this fat may accumulate within liver cells.

However, eating too many sweets on a single day or occasionally does not immediately lead to fatty liver disease. The problem arises from long-term dietary habits. Conditions such as excess weight, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes can further increase this risk.

Can excessive sugar cause liver inflammation?

Fat accumulation in the liver does not always indicate inflammation or liver damage. In some individuals, there may be no initial, visible signs of inflammation or injury despite the presence of liver fat.

However, in some cases, the condition can progress, leading to inflammation and cellular damage alongside fat accumulation. If this persists over the long term, the risk of serious liver conditions—such as fibrosis and cirrhosis—increases. In severe cases, the risk of liver cancer may also rise.

Therefore, it is advisable to limit the consumption of sweets and sugary beverages, especially during festivals. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, and weight management can help maintain liver health.
