An Inspiring Journey: Vandana Dhavate Becomes the First Indian Woman to Qualify for the World’s Toughest Cycling Race

Cyclist Vandana Dhavate: Stories of courage and determination are often born out of adversity. Hyderabad-based Vandana Dhavate took up cycling during the lockdown to alleviate mental stress, and today, she has qualified for one of the world’s toughest cycling races. Vandana Dhavate has become the first Indian woman to qualify for the ‘Race Across America’ (RAAM). This event is considered one of the world’s most grueling ‘ultra-endurance’ cycling competitions, requiring participants to cover a distance of approximately 4,800 kilometers. Her journey from an ordinary horticulturist to a world-class athlete stands as a living testament not merely to physical prowess, but to unwavering mental courage and passion.

About Vandana Dhavate:
Vandana hails from Maharashtra but has been settled in Hyderabad for a long time. She is set to travel to the United States in June 2026 for the ‘Race Across America’ (RAAM). Professionally, Vandana is a horticulturist. Her family has been her greatest source of strength throughout this challenging journey; her husband and 18-year-old son provide her with full support during her training and races. According to media reports, Vandana has covered a total distance of over 78,772 kilometers on her bicycle so far. She also participated in the prestigious ‘Paris-Brest-Paris’ race (1,200 km) in France in 2023.

Lockdown Stress and the Start of Cycling:
Vandana’s journey did not begin with the aim of becoming a professional athlete, but rather as a form of therapy. In 2020, amidst the widespread uncertainty of the lockdown, she stepped out of her home and began cycling in search of mental peace. It began as a ride of just a few kilometers, but as she kept pedaling, she discovered a newfound energy and courage within herself. She realized that every uphill climb was making her stronger.

The Journey from Horticulturist to ‘Ultra-Cyclist’
The world of sports was entirely new to Vandana, whose profession kept her close to plants and nature. While she spent her days as a horticulture expert, she began sweating it out on the roads—from the darkness of night to the first light of dawn. Her dedication was such that she persisted with grueling training sessions, cycling for hours on end without sleep.

RAAM: The Challenge of the World’s Toughest Race
Vandana made history when she qualified for the ‘Race Across America’ (RAAM). Spanning from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States, this race requires cyclists to brave towering mountains, scorching deserts, and adverse weather conditions. Participants must keep cycling despite sleep deprivation and physical exhaustion. Vandana’s achievement serves as a fresh source of inspiration for Indian women, proving that they are second to none in the global sports arena. Her story teaches us that obstacles exist only in our minds. Today, she is not just a successful cyclist but also a beacon of hope for millions of women.
