News of a tragic accident has emerged from the South American country of Guyana. A boat/ferry carrying 133 people capsized at sea, sparking panic. Officials reported the incident, stating that 67 people have been rescued so far, and a rescue operation is underway to locate the others. However, the exact death toll from the accident remains unclear.
Where was the boat headed?
According to information provided by Guyana’s Prime Minister Mark Phillips, the capsized vessel was named ‘MV Barima’. It was traveling from the capital, Georgetown, to Port Kaituma via the North Atlantic coast when it capsized near the Pomeroon River. PM Phillips stated that 15 children are among the 67 people rescued during the search and rescue operation launched after the accident.

Guyana’s Minister Juan Edghill announced on Facebook that the report of the capsizing was received at 11:01 PM local time. Upon receiving the news, a search and rescue operation was immediately launched at the site with the help of government and private vessels. Officials expressed hope that more passengers would be rescued safely. Prime Minister Mark Phillips is personally overseeing the government’s relief and rescue efforts.
Accident in Vietnam as well
It is worth noting that just days before this incident in Guyana, a major accident occurred in the Asian country of Vietnam. A boat carrying several Indian passengers capsized near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island, resulting in 15 deaths. The boat overturned at sea, approximately 400 meters from the shore, causing everyone on board to fall into the water. According to reports, a total of 36 people were on board the boat involved in the accident. They included 32 tourists and four crew members. Fifteen people died in the accident, while 21 were rescued.
