CG Electricity Crisis: Power generation across all seven units of the NTPC Jamnipali station has come to a halt due to a technical glitch that occurred during breaker testing. This has stopped the generation of 2,600 MW of electricity from the power station. The shutdown of all units at this major public-sector NTPC power station in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district has disrupted power supplies to Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Daman & Diu, and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. Efforts are underway to resolve the technical issue at the NTPC Korba station.
Technical Glitch During Breaker Testing
Senior NTPC officials and management staff are working to rectify the technical fault so that all seven units can resume production. A management official stated that a Power Grid Corporation team was conducting breaker testing. During this process, a technical glitch occurred, causing a sudden surge (jerk) that affected the Jamnipali station’s power transmission line and all associated units.
2,600 MW Power Generation Halted
Following this sudden incident, all seven units of the NTPC Jamnipali power station went offline, bringing total power generation at the plant to a standstill. The NTPC Jamnipali station generates 2,600 MW of electricity. Under the supervision of the Power Grid Corporation, this power is supplied via transmission lines to Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa. The Union Territories of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli also receive power from the Jamnipali station; reports indicate that power supply systems in these regions have also been disrupted following the technical issue at the station.
SF-6 Breaker Testing
A team from the Power Grid Corporation (PGCIL) was conducting necessary tests to install an SF-6 breaker in the NTPC switchyard. During this process, the breaker exploded. This sudden technical glitch caused a severe jolt to the power grid’s transmission lines and the units at the NTPC Jamnipali station, resulting in all units tripping simultaneously.
Seven units installed
The station houses three units of 200 MW each and four units of 500 MW each. Thus, the plant generates a total of 2,600 MW of electricity from these seven units.
