CG News: Sarguja. A major accident occurred amidst heavy rainfall in Mainpat, located in Chhattisgarh’s Sarguja district. A young man and woman riding a motorcycle were swept away by the swollen Ghunghutta River. Thanks to the quick thinking and courage of a local villager, the woman was pulled to safety, while the young man was carried away by the strong current and remains missing. Following the incident, police and locals launched a search operation, but it had to be halted in the late evening due to darkness.
Accident Occurred on Saturday Evening
According to reports, the incident took place around 5:30 PM on Saturday near Camp No. 2 in Ropakhar, under the jurisdiction of the Kamleshwarpur police station. It is reported that the water level of the Ghunghutta River had risen suddenly due to heavy rains, causing the river to swell.
At that moment, the young man and woman on the motorcycle were caught in the river’s strong current and began to be swept away. The sudden accident caused panic at the scene.
Villager Saves Woman’s Life
Upon learning that the couple had been swept into the river, local villagers rushed to help. Displaying great courage, one villager managed to pull the woman safely out of the rushing water.
Her life was saved because she was rescued in time. It is currently unclear whether she sustained any injuries during the incident.
Young Man Swept Away; No Trace Found Yet
While the woman was rescued, the young man was swept away by the strong current. Locals searched for him for a considerable time. After being informed, a police team arrived at the scene and initiated a search operation.
Teams comprising police and locals searched potential areas along the riverbank, but no trace of the young man could be found by late evening.
The search continued despite the heavy rain and high water levels; however, the operation had to be suspended due to darkness. A search operation is likely to resume depending on weather conditions and the situation on the ground.
