CG Public Holiday: The Government of Chhattisgarh has declared a public holiday on Monday, November 9, 2026, on the occasion of Govardhan Puja. The state government has issued an order to this effect, converting what was previously an optional holiday into a public (general) holiday. This decision will allow employees in the state’s government offices and institutions to take the day off to celebrate the festival.
According to notification number GENS-2101/3340/2026-GAD-5, issued by the General Administration Department, November 9, 2026, had previously been included in the list of optional holidays for Govardhan Puja, as per a notification dated November 6, 2025. The government has now amended this, declaring the day a public (general) holiday.
Religious Significance of Govardhan Puja
Govardhan Puja is celebrated on the day following Diwali. On this occasion, Lord Krishna and Mount Govardhan are worshipped. According to religious belief, Lord Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan to protect the people of Braj; the festival is celebrated in commemoration of this event. In Chhattisgarh, too, Govardhan Puja is observed with traditional devotion and enthusiasm.
