CG State Butterfly: In a significant move to promote the conservation of butterflies and highlight Chhattisgarh’s rich biodiversity, the Department of Forest and Climate Change has initiated the process of declaring the state’s first “State Butterfly.” To ensure public participation in this historic initiative, the department has invited online votes via a Google Form. Forest Minister Kedar Kashyap urged the people of the state to participate in large numbers, emphasizing that biodiversity conservation is the responsibility of every citizen, not just the government. Selecting the state butterfly through public participation will foster greater awareness and sensitivity towards nature and wildlife conservation among the people.
Selection of Three Butterfly Species
An expert committee constituted for the selection process has shortlisted the following three butterfly species based on various scientific and ecological criteria:
Common Banded Peacock
Orange Oakleaf
Spot Swordtail
These species were selected based on key parameters such as ecological significance, presence within the state, conservation value, uniqueness, ease of identification, and public appeal (charisma).
Voting Open Until August 31
The Forest Department has launched online voting via Google Forms to gather public opinion. Every citizen of the state can cast their vote for their preferred butterfly. The deadline for voting is August 31, 2026. Based on the public feedback received and the expert committee’s recommendations, a final proposal for the state butterfly will be prepared, and further action will be taken in accordance with established procedures.
