Cyber Fraud Alert: Cases of online fraud and ‘digital arrest’ are rising rapidly across the country. People often lose their hard-earned money by falling into the traps of scammers who pose as police officers or investigative agency officials to intimidate them. If you ever fall victim to such fraud, it is crucial to take the right steps immediately rather than panicking. The sooner you file a complaint, the higher the chances of recovering your money.
What to do immediately after money is deducted?
Dial 1930 immediately: As soon as the fraudulent transaction occurs, call the National Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930. Calling promptly allows the bank to freeze the fraudulent transaction, potentially preventing the money from reaching the scammer’s account.
Keep the SMS reference number safe: Shortly after the call, you will receive a message with a reference number on your mobile. Keep this safe, as it will be required for subsequent steps.
How to file an online complaint on the portal
After speaking to the 1930 helpline, visit the official cyber portal (cybercrime.gov.in). Click on ‘File a Complaint’ and log in using your mobile number. Select ‘Financial Fraud’ as the category of fraud. Then, enter the time of the incident, the amount lost, and full details of the fraud.
Upon submitting the form, you will receive a Complaint ID/Acknowledgement Number, which you can use later to check the status in the ‘Track Your Complaint’ section.
What documents are required when filing a complaint?
Bank statement showing the fraudulent transaction (where the deducted amount is clearly visible)
Screenshots of suspicious messages, WhatsApp chats, or links
Transaction ID/Reference Number if the fraud occurred via UPI
Mobile number linked to the bank account and an identity proof (ID Proof)
Simple tips to avoid fraud
Never install unknown links, files, or suspicious apps on your phone.
Never share your OTP or password with anyone, even if they claim to be a bank official or represent another organization.
If someone claiming to be from the police, CBI, or a judge threatens you via video call, do not panic; disconnect the call immediately and report the incident to the cyber cell.
