Sugar Prices in Chhattisgarh: Consumers distressed by rising sugar prices are finally finding relief. Sugar, which had reached ₹70 per kg a short while ago, has now dropped to ₹50 per kg in the wholesale market, while retail prices range between ₹53 and ₹55 per kg. About 15 days ago, the rates hovered around ₹65 per kg in retail and ₹55 per kg in wholesale. A price drop of approximately ₹10 to ₹15 per kg has been recorded within a month.
Stricter Rules for Trader Registration
According to wholesale traders, the price drop is driven by increased market supply as well as stricter measures implemented by the Central Government. The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) has tightened regulations regarding trader registration. Dealers who fail to register by September 15 will be unable to procure sugar from mills. This move is expected to directly curb unregulated purchasing and hoarding in the market.
Procurement from Maharashtra Mills
Prakash Agrawal, President of the Chhattisgarh Sugar Trade Association, stated that major traders in the capital rely on sugar mills in Maharashtra and other states for their stock. The Central Government has also tightened regulations at the mill level, leading to enhanced monitoring of market availability and supply chains. Wholesale sugar prices have now come down to ₹50 per kg. If this supply trend continues, consumers might get sugar at even lower prices during the festive season. In major markets like the capital’s Golbazar, retail prices have settled at ₹55 per kg.
Key Guidelines
All sugar dealers are mandatorily required to register on the DFPD portal.
All dealers must declare their stock levels on the portal every Friday.
From September 15, 2026, sugar mills will not sell sugar to any unregistered dealer; sales will be restricted to dealers registered on the DFPD portal who have declared their stock.
The monthly sugar quota will now be released in two parts.
At least 40 percent of the stock allocated for the first 15 days must be sold. The government has issued guidelines to all dealers stating that there is no shortage of sugar stocks in the country.
