Government Schemes: During one’s working years, a monthly salary easily covers household expenses. However, after retirement, this regular source of income ceases. In such a situation, it is essential to plan finances in advance to cover expenses like groceries, electricity bills, medical costs, and other necessities. If you have accumulated savings, you can secure a regular income by investing in certain government savings schemes.
The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (MIS), the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS), and the National Pension System (NPS) are options worth considering when planning for retirement. It should be noted, however, that these schemes differ in terms of investment conditions, payout structures, and the amounts they offer.
- Post Office MIS: Earn Monthly Interest
The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (MIS) is useful for those who wish to invest a lump sum and receive a monthly income in the form of interest. The investment tenure for this scheme is five years, and the principal amount is returned upon maturity.
Based on an annual interest rate of 7.4%, an investment of ₹5 lakh would yield approximately ₹3,083 in monthly interest. Similarly, an investment of ₹9 lakh could generate around ₹5,550 per month.
The maximum investment limit for this scheme is ₹9 lakh for a single account and ₹15 lakh for a joint account. If a couple opens a joint account and invests ₹15 lakh, they could receive approximately ₹9,250 per month as interest.
Thus, the MIS is a suitable option for investors who require a regular income and wish to avoid investments exposed to market volatility. Before investing, be sure to verify the current interest rate and the applicable rules. 2. SCSS: A Savings Option for Senior Citizens
The Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) is designed specifically for senior citizens. Generally, individuals aged 60 years or older are eligible to invest in it. Under certain specified conditions, retired individuals aged 55 years or older can also avail the benefits of this scheme.
The scheme offers an annual interest rate of 8.2%. A maximum investment of up to ₹30 lakh is permitted. Unlike the Monthly Income Scheme (MIS), interest under the SCSS is paid quarterly (once every three months) rather than monthly.
For instance, if an individual invests ₹10 lakh, they would earn approximately ₹82,000 in annual interest at a rate of 8.2%—translating to about ₹20,500 every quarter.
Similarly, an investment of ₹30 lakh could yield an annual interest of approximately ₹2.46 lakh, amounting to about ₹61,500 every three months. On a monthly basis, this averages out to ₹20,500; however, the actual payouts are made quarterly, not monthly.
- NPS: Planning for Post-Retirement Pension
The National Pension System (NPS) is an option for those who wish to secure a pension for their post-retirement years by making regular investments during their working life. The deposited funds are invested; therefore, the returns depend on market performance and the specific investment options chosen.
At the time of retirement, a portion of the accumulated corpus can be withdrawn as a lump sum—in accordance with applicable rules—while the remaining mandatory portion is used to purchase an annuity. This annuity, in turn, provides a regular pension. The specific rules regarding withdrawals and the annuity will depend on the category of the scheme and the provisions in effect at that time. For example, if you have ₹50 lakh in your NPS account at the time of retirement and 40% of this amount—i.e., ₹20 lakh—is invested in an annuity, then, assuming an annual annuity rate of 6%, you could receive an annual pension of approximately ₹1.20 lakh. This would amount to roughly ₹10,000 per month.
Please note that the 6% rate is used for illustrative purposes only. The actual pension amount may vary based on the annuity provider, the specific option chosen, and the prevailing rates at that time.
How much income can you expect from each scheme?
Each of these three schemes plays a distinct role in providing a regular income post-retirement. The Monthly Income Scheme (MIS) offers monthly interest payouts, the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) provides interest on a quarterly basis, while the pension from the NPS depends on your accumulated fund and the terms of the annuity.
Before making an investment decision, assess your monthly expenses, existing savings, age, and financial requirements. For instance, if you require ₹20,000 per month after retirement, it is essential to calculate how much income your chosen scheme will generate and whether any additional funds need to be arranged.
Note: Interest rates and investment-related rules are subject to change from time to time. Before investing, please verify the current rates, eligibility criteria, and terms and conditions with the relevant government department or the post office.
