Lok Sabha Elections 2024: EVM Malfunction in Manipur, Bullets Fired, Stone Pelting in Bengal; A Recap of First Phase Voting

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Voting for the first phase of the general elections lasted from 8 am to 6 pm. As of 5 pm, the highest voting took place in West Bengal.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024:  Voting for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024 concluded at 6 pm on Friday (April 19, 2024). The state where incidents of violence were witnessed also witnessed the highest voter turnout. According to the data of the Election Commission, West Bengal recorded the highest voting percentage of 77.57 per cent till 5 pm, while Bihar recorded the lowest voting percentage of only 46.32 per cent till this time. In such a situation, Bihar lagged behind all states and union territories in terms of voting.

Many incidents of violence were seen in Manipur and West Bengal during the voting. The chaos in the North East state was such that amid firing and uproar, the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) was broken and thrown away. Many videos related to this incident surfaced on the social media platform X, which went viral in no time.

Meanwhile, stone pelting took place in West Bengal. Cooch Behar emerged as the centre of violence on the day of voting. This is because after several incidents there, there was a lot of uproar in Gyargari in Dinhata. It is alleged that the people of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in the state attacked the camp office of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Along with vandalism, party workers were beaten up there. Later, the BJP demonstrated and protested against this.

Talking about the voting percentage of other states other than West Bengal and Bihar, till 5 pm, 76.10 percent voting took place in Tripura, 70.77 percent in Assam, 72.84 percent in Puducherry, 69.91 percent in Meghalaya, 68.62 percent in Manipur, 68.06 percent in Sikkim, 65.08 percent in Jammu and Kashmir, 63.97 percent in Arunachal Pradesh, 63.41 percent in Chhattisgarh, 59.02 percent in Lakshadweep, 56.87 percent in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, 55.02 percent in Nagaland, 53.56 percent in Uttarakhand and 53.03 percent in Mizoram. If we look at the vote percentage of big states, 57.54 percent voters exercised their franchise in Uttar Pradesh, 62.08 percent in Tamil Nadu, 63.25 percent in Madhya Pradesh, 54.85 percent in Maharashtra and 50.27 percent in Rajasthan.

With the voting of the first phase of the general elections, the fate of many political heavyweights got sealed in the EVMs.

There were 102 seats of 21 states and union territories in this phase, out of which the number of VVIP seats is very large. With the completion of voting of this phase, the fate of nine Union Ministers, two former Chief Ministers and one former Governor of the country got sealed in the EVMs. 

The VVIP seats on which everyone’s eyes were in the first phase include Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Moradabad, Rampur, Pilibhit in UP, Cooch Behar in West Bengal, Gaya and Jamui in Bihar, Nagpur in Maharashtra, Sidhi, Jabalpur, Mandla, Chhindwara in Madhya Pradesh, Dibrugarh and Jorhat in Assam, Bastar in Chhattisgarh, Bikaner, Churu, Jaipur Rural, Nagaur seat in Rajasthan, Tripura West seat in Tripura, Chennai South, Sriperumbudur, Kanchipuram, Salem, Nilgiri, Coimbatore, Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu, Garhwal and Haridwar in Uttarakhand as well as Tura seat in Meghalaya.
