The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has taken action regarding products sold in the market that resemble paneer in appearance and usage but are not made using milk. The FSSAI has issued a draft notification proposing a ban on the use of the word ‘paneer’ in the packaging and marketing of products made from non-milk ingredients. Under the proposal, products prepared using starch, vegetable oil, or other non-dairy ingredients instead of milk will no longer be permitted to be sold as ‘paneer’. Such products must be sold under a different name that reflects their true nature and identity.
Preventing Consumer Misleading via the Name ‘Paneer’
The FSSAI states that the objective of this move is to provide consumers with clear information about such products. Many products look and function like paneer but do not contain milk or dairy ingredients. Selling such products under the name ‘paneer’ can create confusion among consumers.
Proposal to Apply to ‘Analogue in Dairy Context’ Products
According to the draft proposal, products already licensed or registered under the ‘Analogue in Dairy Context’ category will also be prohibited from using the word ‘paneer’ in their names, labels, or marketing. These products must be marketed with an identity distinct from paneer.
Suggestions and Objections Invited Within 60 Days
The FSSAI has invited suggestions and objections regarding this draft notification from the general public, businesses, and stakeholders. A 60-day period has been allocated for this purpose. Suggestions and objections may be sent to the FSSAI CEO or emailed to regulation@fssai.gov.in. This initiative by FSSAI aims to clarify the labeling and marketing of such products, enabling consumers to easily distinguish whether the product they are purchasing is genuine dairy cheese or an alternative made from non-dairy ingredients.
