New IB Chief: Senior IPS officer Dr. Mahesh Dixit has been appointed as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), the country’s premier internal intelligence agency. Mahesh Dixit is a 1993-batch IPS officer belonging to the Andhra Pradesh cadre. He has been serving as a Special Director within the IB. Dixit will succeed the incumbent IB chief, Tapan Kumar Deka, who has been at the helm of the agency since 2022.
Government Appointment
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved his appointment. An order issued by the committee states that it has sanctioned the appointment of IPS officer Mahesh Dixit—currently a Special Director at the Intelligence Bureau—as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau. He replaces IPS officer Tapan Kumar Deka. His tenure will last for two years from the date of assuming office or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Who is Mahesh Dixit?
Dr. Mahesh Dixit is counted among the country’s most experienced intelligence officers. One of the most significant chapters of his career involved his role in the preparations leading up to the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. Sources familiar with the developments stated that Dixit played a pivotal role in assessing the security implications of this historic move and helped devise strategies to maintain law and order during the transition. Following the reorganization of the erstwhile state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, Dixit was entrusted with key intelligence responsibilities in the region. Officials believe he helped restore public trust during a politically sensitive period while effectively tackling security challenges posed by terrorism and separatist elements.
While he was handling key intelligence responsibilities in Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar successfully hosted the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in 2023. This event attracted significant international attention and participation. The smooth conduct of the summit was hailed as a major achievement in showcasing the region’s improving security environment. During this period, several foreign diplomatic delegations visited Kashmir, reflecting the region’s growing international engagement. Officials familiar with the matter noted that Dixit played a crucial role in accurately assessing ground realities and evolving circumstances. This facilitated better coordination at the diplomatic level and helped strengthen confidence regarding the situation on the ground.
Dixit’s Appointment at a Critical Juncture
This appointment comes at a pivotal moment, as India grapples with a spectrum of security challenges ranging from terrorism and radicalization to cyber threats and cross-border disinformation campaigns. As the new IB chief, Dixit is expected to oversee intelligence operations with the aim of strengthening internal security and enhancing coordination among various security and intelligence agencies.
