New Toll Tax Rules: Relief for highway travelers! No toll to be charged before 60 km; Centre issues new rules.

New Toll Tax Rules: There is good news for highway travelers. The Central Government has issued a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) regarding the establishment of toll plazas on national highways and expressways. According to the new SOP, no toll plaza will be constructed within a 60-kilometer stretch on any new highway. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also constituted a High-Level Toll Committee to ensure strict implementation of this rule.

New Rules Regarding Tolls

As per the new SOP issued by the Central Government, no new toll plaza will be built within 60 kilometers on any new highway or expressway in the country. The minimum distance between two toll plazas on any new national highway or expressway will be 60 kilometers.

The 60-Kilometer Rule – According to the SOP, the minimum distance between two toll plazas on any new national highway or expressway will be 60 kilometers.

Exceptions for Shorter Distances – If, under special circumstances, it becomes necessary to construct a toll plaza within the 60-kilometer limit, the concerned agency must obtain special permission from the high-level committee.

Strict Norms Near Cities – Strict restrictions have also been imposed on constructing toll plazas within a 10-kilometer radius of city limits or municipal corporation boundaries.

High-Level Committee – A committee chaired by the Member (Commercial Operations) of the NHAI will ensure that motorists do not have to bear the financial burden of repeated toll payments.

Existing Toll Plazas – Currently, there are over 130 locations in the country where two toll plazas exist within a 60-kilometer range; however, the new rules will apply to highway projects developed in the future.

All Toll Points in Delhi to Become Barrier-Free

Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to implement a barrier-free, multi-lane free-flow system at all 156 toll points in the capital. The implementation of this new technology is expected to reduce traffic congestion at toll plazas and provide significant relief to the lakhs of people who commute daily.
