Nine months after Nikki Bhati’s death, families reach settlement in Dowry case

Nearly nine months after the shocking death of Greater Noida resident Nikki Bhati, both families have reportedly reached a settlement in the dowry death case through panchayat mediation.

The agreement includes transfer of property in the names of Nikki Bhati’s children, financial assistance for the family and the return of Nikki’s sister Kanchan Bhati to her marital home.

According to reports, the settlement was reached after prolonged discussions between Nikki and Kanchan’s parents and the Bhati family. The dispute had continued for months while police investigated the case and arrested Nikki’s husband Vipin Bhati, his parents and elder brother.

The property transfer decision was reportedly taken to secure the future and legal rights of Nikki’s children. Following the agreement, Nikki’s family is expected to move court seeking withdrawal of the case through an affidavit.

Nikki Bhati died in August last year after allegedly being assaulted and set on fire by her husband and in-laws following repeated dowry demands. Her sister Kanchan, who was married to Vipin’s brother Rohit, had also alleged physical assault and harassment.

According to the family, the sisters jointly operated a beauty salon and created social media content. Nikki’s husband allegedly objected to her posting videos online, leading to frequent disputes at home.

The family had alleged that despite giving a Scorpio SUV, a Royal Enfield motorcycle, gold and cash during the marriage, additional dowry demands continued. Kanchan had earlier claimed that the family was asked to arrange Rs 36 lakh more.

After Nikki’s death, police arrested multiple members of the Bhati family. Vipin Bhati later made headlines after allegedly attempting to escape police custody by snatching a pistol from an officer and opening fire before being injured in retaliatory action.

The case had drawn widespread public attention and became one among several recent alleged dowry death incidents reported across the country, including the deaths of Deepika Nagar in Greater Noida and Twisha Sharma in Bhopal.
