PM Narendra Modi inaugurated six state-of-the-art indoor cricket academies across North-East India, marking a major push to strengthen sports infrastructure in the region.
The facilities, developed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India were virtually launched during an event in Gangtok. The academies are located in Rangpo, Doimukh, Imphal, Madankurklang, Aizawl and Dimapur.
The initiative aims to create a high-performance cricketing ecosystem across the North-East, ensuring access to modern training infrastructure for aspiring players in the region.
The inauguration was attended by Jay Shah along with BCCI officials and administrators from various North-Eastern states.
Conceptualised during Jay Shah’s tenure as BCCI Secretary, the project began with the foundation stone laid in May 2024. It focuses on expanding cricket infrastructure and nurturing talent in emerging regions.
The academies are equipped with advanced facilities, including indoor practice pitches, high-tech gyms, temperature-controlled swimming pools, and dedicated training blocks. These features will allow year-round training, especially important in the North-East where monsoon conditions often disrupt outdoor practice.
BCCI officials said the project aligns with the broader goal of strengthening grassroots cricket and providing equal opportunities to players across the country. The academies are also expected to reduce the need for players from the region to travel elsewhere for professional training.
The move follows the integration of North-Eastern states into India’s domestic cricket structure and is expected to boost talent identification and long-term development in the region.
