Important news has emerged for the lakhs of families residing in over 1,500 unauthorized colonies in the national capital, Delhi. The deadline for applications under the Pradhan Mantri-UDAY (PM-UDAY) scheme—which aims to grant ownership rights to residents of these colonies—may soon be announced. Consequently, those who have not yet applied for ownership rights to their properties are advised to do so promptly. Under the scheme, the process of providing property rights documents to eligible individuals is currently underway. The objective of the PM-UDAY scheme is to grant legal ownership rights of their homes to residents of Delhi’s unauthorized colonies, thereby enabling them to access property-related rights and amenities.
According to media reports, the government may extend the application deadline for the PM-UDAY scheme to October 31, 2026. If the deadline is extended, it will provide an opportunity for those who were previously unable to apply—due to a lack of documentation or other reasons—to avail themselves of the scheme’s benefits. The process of granting property ownership rights to residents of unauthorized colonies under the PM-UDAY scheme is ongoing. The scheme aims to provide residents with legal rights over their homes and resolve uncertainties regarding property ownership.
The PM-UDAY scheme aims to grant legal ownership rights over their properties to residents of Delhi’s unauthorized colonies. Upon obtaining ownership rights under the scheme, residents will gain access to various benefits associated with their property. Ownership rights will simplify property registration and facilitate the process of obtaining bank loans. Furthermore, the legal sale and purchase of properties will become possible, granting residents greater rights and security regarding their assets. This scheme is expected to provide relief to lakhs of families in unauthorized colonies from long-standing property-related issues. Additionally, it is likely to accelerate development work and the expansion of basic amenities in these colonies. The government has implemented several administrative changes to make the PM-UDAY scheme—which grants ownership rights to residents of unauthorized colonies—more effective. PM-UDAY cells have been established at the district level to ensure better implementation, and the application process has been simplified to enable the maximum number of eligible individuals to benefit from the scheme. Launched in 2019, the PM-UDAY scheme aims to grant legal ownership rights to residents of unauthorized colonies over their properties.
How many unauthorized colonies have been regularized?
So far, 1,511 out of approximately 1,731 unauthorized colonies in the capital have been regularized. More than 4.5 million (45 lakh) people reside in these colonies. The application process under the PM-UDAY scheme has been initiated to grant legal property ownership rights to these residents. Applications have been accepted via the municipal corporation’s ‘Swagam’ portal since April 24. Eligible individuals can complete the application process by logging into the municipal corporation’s official portal. Obtaining ownership rights under this scheme is expected to facilitate property registration, bank loans, and legal buying and selling transactions for the residents.
