Rules Changing from September 1st: With the month of August coming to a close, several key administrative, financial, and travel-related rules are set to change starting September 1st. These changes will directly impact your daily life, savings, and household budget. Under these new regulations—covering sectors such as banking, gas cylinder booking, immigration processes, and income tax—certain tasks must be completed within specific timeframes. To avoid penalties or inconvenience, make sure you are fully informed about these seven major changes before September begins.
No Immigration Stamp on Boarding Passes
Starting September 1st, travelers flying from India to international destinations will benefit from a significant convenience at the airport. Under new guidelines from the Bureau of Immigration, there will no longer be a requirement to have a physical stamp affixed to the boarding pass at the immigration counter. Passengers will be able to complete the process by showing an electronic boarding pass (e-Boarding Pass) or a printed copy on their mobile phones. This move eliminates issues like smudged or lost stamps on boarding passes and reduces the time spent on immigration formalities.
LPG e-KYC
The period leading up to August 31st is crucial for domestic LPG consumers. Oil marketing companies such as Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL have set August 31st as the deadline for completing e-KYC for LPG connections. Failure to complete Aadhaar-based biometric verification on time could affect your access to subsidized domestic cylinders or the supply of cylinders starting September 1st.
New Rates for LPG, ATF, CNG, and PNG
As is customary on the first of every month, oil marketing companies will announce new prices for gas cylinders on September 1st. Previously, on August 1st, the price of 19-kg commercial cylinders was slashed by ₹202, while the prices of 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinders remained unchanged. Additionally, new rates for Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), as well as CNG and PNG, are determined at the beginning of the month. Consequently, the new ATF prices announced on September 1st will directly impact airfares.
Deadline for Filing ITR
For taxpayers earning income from business or profession—specifically those not subject to an audit—the deadline to file the Income Tax Return (ITR) for the Assessment Year 2026-27 is August 31, 2026. These taxpayers can file their returns using Forms 3 and 4. Filing a return after the deadline may attract a penalty.
Changes to Credit Card Rewards and Rules
Effective September 1, 2026, American Express is reducing milestone rewards on its Platinum Travel Credit Card in India. Under this change, the 7,500 additional membership points awarded for spending ₹1.9 lakh will be discontinued, although the milestone points for ₹4 lakh in spending will remain unchanged. Meanwhile, Axis Bank has also revised several terms and conditions related to its credit cards, effective from August 28, 2026.
Government Curbs on Sugar Stockpiling
To curb rising prices, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has imposed stock limits on wholesale sugar buyers. This restriction will be in effect from September 1 to November 30, 2026. Businesses consuming more than 10 metric tonnes of sugar per month will now be permitted to hold stock equivalent to a maximum of 15 days’ requirement.
Increased Transparency in Bank FDs
To enhance transparency in the banking system, new Reserve Bank guidelines mandate changes to the rules governing large Fixed Deposits (FDs). Starting September 1, banks must publicly disclose interest rates for bulk FDs of ₹3 crore or more on their websites daily by 10:10 AM. However, this transparent rule will come into full effect from October 1, 2026.
