New Delhi: The pace of the Southwest Monsoon is slowing down across the country, and it is now preparing to withdraw. The northwestern region of the country will be the first to bid farewell to the rainy season. This year, the monsoon is set for a delayed withdrawal. While the monsoon typically exits the country completely only after the beginning of October, withdrawal begins in some states as early as mid-September. The normal date for the monsoon’s withdrawal from northwest India is September 17–18, though it is running slightly late this year.
When will the monsoon withdraw from Rajasthan?
According to the Meteorological Department, the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from several parts of Rajasthan could begin this week. The Meteorological Centre in Jaipur indicates that conditions favorable for monsoon withdrawal—along with a reduction in rainfall activity—are likely to develop around September 19 in parts of western Rajasthan. This means the monsoon could withdraw from Rajasthan after September 19.
When will the monsoon withdraw from Delhi and Haryana?
According to the Meteorological Department, the impact of rainfall is expected to gradually diminish in Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana over the next few days. This shift will lead to clearer skies and reduced humidity, after which rainfall activity may cease. The monsoon could withdraw from Delhi and its surrounding areas, as well as from Haryana and Punjab, after September 20–21.

Meanwhile, the monsoon could withdraw from Uttar Pradesh within the next week. The Meteorological Department stated that rainfall activity is expected to gradually decrease across several districts of the state, and there is a likelihood that the Southwest Monsoon will withdraw from Uttar Pradesh starting September 22. According to IMD officials, a low-pressure area—extending from Saurashtra and the adjoining northeast Arabian Sea through Bikaner, Churu, Bareilly, Gorakhpur, Patna, Ranchi, and Kolkata to the northeast Bay of Bengal—is currently influencing the state’s weather. Due to this system, some districts in the state experienced heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours.
How does the monsoon withdraw? The withdrawal of the monsoon is not an overnight phenomenon. The Meteorological Department announces the monsoon’s withdrawal after September 1st only when three distinct signs are observed: the absence of rainfall in the region for five consecutive days, the onset of dry winds, and the formation of a high-pressure system in the lower atmosphere. As the influence of dry winds intensifies, the skies begin to clear, and subsequently, rainfall activity ceases.
