Om Birla, the Lok Sabha Speaker again| As soon as elected Birla condemned the Emergency: Faces Opposition Backlash!

Om Birla, a 3-time MP and MLA, elected Lok Sabha Speaker again. He condemned the Emergency immediately, sparking opposition allegations of pushing BJP's agenda amidst House sloganeering.

Om Birla Elected Speaker: BJP MP from Kota, Om Birla has been elected the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha. Om Birla was elected Speaker by voice vote on the proposal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi . Om Birla defeated opposition candidate and 8-time MP K Suresh in this election for Lok Sabha Speaker. After being elected Speaker, PM Modi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi reached to congratulate Om Birla. During this, Rahul Gandhi also shook hands with PM Modi. After this, PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju took Om Birla to the Speaker’s seat. 

After being elected Speaker, Om Birla condemned the Emergency in the House. He said- Indira Gandhi had insulted the Constitution made by Ambedkar by imposing Emergency. As soon as the Speaker put forward the proposal, the MPs of the ruling and opposition parties started sloganeering.

Speaker Om Birla asked for two minutes of silence in memory of those who lost their lives during the Emergency. The ruling party MPs observed silence, but Congress and opposition MPs continued to create ruckus. Congress MPs alleged that the Speaker was pursuing the BJP’s agenda. After the silence, the Speaker adjourned the Parliament till Thursday.

Earlier, NDA candidate Om Birla was elected Speaker of Lok Sabha by voice vote on Wednesday. PM Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition in the House Rahul Gandhi came to see him off at the podium. The opposition had demanded voting. Their candidate was K. Suresh. Pro tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab rejected this demand.

PM Modi had proposed Birla’s name. PM said- Om Birla’s experience will be useful for the country. Rahul Gandhi said- I am confident that you will not let the voice of the opposition be suppressed.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said- I hope the voice of the opposition will not be suppressed. Nor will any action like expulsion be taken. You have control over the opposition as well as over the government. The House runs on your orders, the opposite should not happen.

When PM Modi took the name of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan while introducing his cabinet in the House, the opposition MPs started shouting shame-shame.

Even when Dharmendra Pradhan went to take oath as MP on Monday, opposition MPs raised slogans of NEET-NEET, shame-shame.

Om Birla said- This House condemns the imposition of Emergency in 1975. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi insulted Ambedkar’s Constitution by imposing Emergency. Indira Gandhi insulted democracy by imposing dictatorship on India. Freedom of expression was snatched away. Many restrictions were imposed on the media. Many leaders were imprisoned under MISA.

As soon as the Speaker moved the censure motion, sloganeering started from both the ruling and opposition parties.

Om Birla was elected MP for the third time from Kota seat of Rajasthan in the recently held Lok Sabha elections. He was elected MP from Kota seat for the first time in 2014. Before becoming an MP, Birla was also an MLA thrice.

Om Birla was elected MP for the third time from Kota seat of Rajasthan in the recently held Lok Sabha elections. Congress had fielded Prahlad Gunjal, who had come from BJP, against him. Birla defeated Gunjal by more than 41 thousand votes. Birla was unanimously made the candidate for Lok Sabha Speaker by NDA on Tuesday.

– Om Birla was elected MP from Kota seat for the first time in 2014. After this, he was also elected MP in 2019 and 2024.

– Om Birla has become the first leader to become the Speaker for the second consecutive time in nearly two decades. Before him, Sumitra Mahajan has been the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2014 to 2019. However, Om Birla has become the first BJP leader to be elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha twice in a row. 

– Before Om Birla, in 1985, Balram Jakhar of Congress was elected Lok Sabha Speaker twice in a row.

– Born in 1962, Birla is considered a leader who works for the organization behind the scenes. He entered politics in 1987 by joining the BJP Yuva Morcha. Om Birla was also an MLA from Kota South seat of Rajasthan from 2003 to 2014. 

-In 2019, surprising everyone, his name was proposed for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. Birla is the first Lok Sabha Speaker during whose tenure no Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker was elected. Birla also has a record of presiding over the Lok Sabha in both the old and new Parliament buildings.

How much property does Om Birla have?

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla had given details of his assets in the affidavit given to the Election Commission during the Lok Sabha elections 2024. According to his affidavit, Om Birla has assets worth Rs 10.62 crore. Not only this, he does not have any liabilities of any kind. 

According to the affidavit, Om Birla has Rs 40,000 in cash, while his wife has Rs 30,000 in cash. Om Birla has Rs 1.32 crore deposited in his bank accounts, while his wife has about Rs 94 lakh deposited in her bank accounts.
