The inauguration of the Ganga Expressway by Prime Minister Narendra Modi marks a major leap in Uttar Pradesh’s infrastructure expansion. Spanning 594 km from Meerut to Prayagraj, it is the state’s longest expressway and connects 12 districts across western, central, and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Designed to significantly improve road connectivity, the expressway is expected to cut travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj from around 11 hours to nearly 6 hours. Average travel speeds are projected to rise from 50–60 kmph to around 100 kmph, making long-distance road travel faster and more efficient. The project also enhances freight movement and strengthens connectivity across key logistics corridors.
Officials highlighted that Uttar Pradesh will now account for nearly 60% of India’s access-controlled expressway network, underscoring its growing role in national infrastructure development. The expressway is aligned with key government initiatives such as PM Gati Shakti, Bharatmala Pariyojana, and the National Infrastructure Pipeline.
The project, built at an estimated cost of ₹36,230 crore, was executed through major infrastructure firms, including Adani Enterprises (via Adani Road Transport Ltd), which completed 464 km, and IRB Infrastructure Developers, which constructed 130 km. Over 12,000 workers and heavy machinery were deployed at peak construction.
Economically, the expressway is expected to boost trade, agriculture, and tourism. Regions like Prayagraj, Kaushambi, and Pratapgarh are likely to benefit from better access to markets. Agricultural goods such as grains, vegetables, and amla will reach urban centers faster, potentially increasing farmers’ incomes. The route is also expected to promote tourism, especially during major events like the Maha Kumbh and Magh Mela.
A toll of approximately ₹1,800 for a one-way journey for four-wheelers is expected, with possible introductory discounts.
Overall, the Ganga Expressway is set to become a key growth corridor, improving connectivity, reducing logistics costs, and driving regional economic development across Uttar Pradesh.
