Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat suffered a major setback after failing to qualify for the Asian Games 2026. The former world championship medallist lost 4-6 to Meenakshi Goyat in the women’s 53kg semi-finals during the selection trials held in New Delhi.
The trials were marked by controversy and tense moments. Vinesh had earlier fought her way into the semi-finals after overcoming Nishu in a dramatic quarter-final. She was also allowed to compete in the 53kg category after the Wrestling Federation of India reversed its earlier decision restricting her to the 50kg division. Despite a strong effort, Vinesh’s campaign ended in heartbreak as she missed out on securing a place for the upcoming Asian Games.
