ODI World Cup 2027: While participating teams are busy solidifying their preparations for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup, the ICC is simultaneously working to finalize the schedule. The tournament will be co-hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe; the ICC announced the 12 venues for the event a few days ago. The ICC is now planning to hold the opening match on October 2, which also marks Gandhi Jayanti. Through this move, the ICC aims to send a significant message to the world.
The Final Match Will Be Played on November 21
According to a Cricbuzz report, the ICC plans to kick off the 2027 ODI World Cup on October 2 to honor the life of the leader who championed peace and non-violence. This indicates the ICC’s intention to start the World Cup on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary—a figure who shared a deep connection with South Africa, having spent 21 years there. Initially, the ICC had planned to hold warm-up matches during the first week of October (October 1–7) and start the main tournament on October 8. However, there have been changes; Under the revised schedule, the main tournament could now begin on October 2, with warm-up matches taking place prior to that. The title clash remains scheduled for November 21.
ODI World Cup to be Played in a Revised Format
The ICC has modified the format for this edition of the ODI World Cup, which will feature a total of 14 teams. The top 10 teams will be determined based on ICC rankings as of September 30, 2026. Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, along with India, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, have already secured their spots, while the 10th team is yet to be decided. As for the remaining four teams, they will be decided through qualifiers scheduled for early next year; it has already been confirmed that co-host Namibia, along with the West Indies and Ireland, will participate in them.
