T20 World Cup 2024: America Makes History, Enters Super 8; Pakistan Eliminated! India’s Unbeaten Streak in Super 8 Continues

T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan out as USA makes history. India's path to semi-finals looks easy, facing Australia, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh in Super-8.

T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan is out of the T20 World Cup due to the cancellation of the Ireland-USA match. The 2009 champion Pakistan team cannot reach the Super-8 even after winning the last match against Ireland. The US team reached the Super 8 with 5 points while Pakistan’s dream of reaching the next round was shattered. The US team, which played in the T20 World Cup for the first time, has created history. It has reached this far in its first attempt. The toss could not even take place in this match to be played in Lauderhill, Florida.

On the other hand, Team India has not only reached the Super-8, but its path to the semi-finals also looks quite easy. The Indian team can face Australia, Afghanistan and Bangladesh in the Super-8. Afghanistan and Bangladesh have never defeated India in this tournament.

America became the sixth team to reach the Super 8

America became the sixth team to reach the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8.

Earlier, teams from India, South Africa, Australia, Afghanistan and West Indies have got tickets for the Super 8.

20 teams are participating in this World Cup. They have been divided into four groups of 5 each.

The top two teams from all four groups will get tickets for the Super 8.

How did Pakistan get eliminated?

On Friday, the match between Ireland and America got cancelled due to rain. Both the teams got 1 point each. America has 5 points from 2 wins, 1 loss and 1 cancelled match in 4 matches. Pakistan has 2 points from 1 win and 2 losses in 3 matches. Even after winning the last match against Ireland, the team will be able to reach only 4 points, which is not enough to leave America behind.

Team India had already qualified from Group A with 6 points. Their last match will be against Canada in Florida today. Only 2 teams from one group will reach the Super 8 in the tournament. India and America qualified from Group A, so the teams of Pakistan, Ireland and Canada also got out of the race for Super 8.

Do the remaining matches in Group A have no meaning now?

The remaining two matches of Group A will have no effect on the points table of Super 8. In Group A, today there will be a match between India-Canada and on June 16, there will be a match between Pakistan-Ireland. India has made it to the Super 8, while the remaining 3 teams are out of the race.

If India wins, it will reach the Super-8 with the winning momentum of 4 consecutive wins. If Canada wins, it will defeat India for the first time in cricket. If Pakistan wins against Ireland, the team will end its journey with 4 points. If Ireland wins, the team will defeat Pakistan in T-20 for the second time in the last 4 matches.

How will India’s path to the semi-finals become easy?

It has been decided that Australia and Afghanistan will join India in the Super-8. The fourth team can be Bangladesh or Netherlands. If this happens, Team India will face Afghanistan on June 20, Bangladesh or Netherlands on June 22 and Australia on June 24. Among these, the team has never lost a T-20 World Cup match against Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Even if the Netherlands team comes in place of Bangladesh, the equation will remain the same. The Indian team has never lost to the Netherlands in the World Cup.

Team India has not lost to Afghanistan even in the World Cup

India’s first match in the Super-8 stage will be against Afghanistan in Barbados. India has played 8 T-20 Internationals against Afghanistan, only one match ended in a draw, while Team India won 7.

The last T20 match between the two was played in Bengaluru. India scored 212 runs, but Afghanistan also scored 212 runs and tied the match. The match was decided by a super-over, but here too the scores were equal. In the second super-over, India again scored more runs and won the match.

Both the teams clashed 3 times in the T20 World Cup. India won all three matches. In 2010, both clashed for the first time in the tournament on the ground of West Indies. Then India won the match by 7 wickets. In 2012, both clashed in Colombo, here India won by 23 runs. Both clashed for the last time in 2021 on the ground of Abu Dhabi. India won here too by 66 runs.

Overall 12 T20 matches were played against Bangladesh, but India lost only one

India’s second match in Super-8 can be against Bangladesh in Antigua. India has played 13 T20 matches against Bangladesh, India won 12 and Bangladesh won only one. This defeat was by 7 wickets in 2019 at Delhi ground. The last T20 match between the two was played in Asian Games, which India won by 9 wickets.

There were 4 matches between the two teams in the T20 World Cup, India won all four. In 2009, both teams clashed for the first time in Nottingham, India won by 25 runs. In 2014, Team India won by 8 wickets at Mirpur ground, in 2016 by 1 run at Bangladesh ground and in 2022 at Adelaide ground by 5 runs. That is, the last two matches of the World Cup were very close, but India won every time.

Challenge from Australia

India’s third and last match in Super-8 will be against Australia in St. Lucia. India will have to be cautious against Australia because India has lost against this team in both T-20 International and World Cup. However, India has the upper hand against Australia.

31 T-20 matches were played between the two teams, India won 19 and Australia won 11. One match was also inconclusive. India won the last match between the two in Bengaluru by 6 runs.

India-Australia have played 5 matches in the T20 World Cup, India won 3 and Australia won 2. In 2007, India won the semi-final by 15 runs. In 2010, Australia won by 49 runs in Barbados and by 9 runs at Colombo ground in 2012. In 2014, India won the match by 73 runs at Mirpur ground and by 6 wickets at Mohali ground in 2016. Now both the teams will face each other in the tournament after 8 years.

Which teams are in Group-2 of Super-8?

Along with Group-1 in Super-8, ICC had also decided the teams for Group-2. Currently, West Indies, South Africa and USA have cleared the first round and have made it to Group-2. The fourth team will be from Group-B, for which England and Scotland are the contenders. Among these too, England has more chances of qualifying.

In Super-8, the top 2 teams from both the groups will go to the semi-finals. Here the table topper of Group-1 will face the team ranked second in Group-2. Similarly, the topper of Group-2 will face the team ranked second in Group-1. In simple words, if India finishes on top in Group-1 and West Indies finishes second in Group-2, then the semi-final will be played between the two on 27 June in Guyana.

Super 8 groups are as such (as of June 15)

Group 1: A1 (India), B2 (Australia), C1 (Afghanistan), D2 (Most likely Bangladesh)
Group 2: A2 (USA), B1 (England/Scotland), C2 (West Indies), D1 (South Africa)
