How much have you spent on a toothbrush so far? Your answer would likely range from ₹10–20 for a standard one to ₹2,000 for an electric model. However, a toothbrush costing around ₹50,000 has now hit the market. Dyson has launched its new ‘CameraJet’ electric toothbrush, priced at $499.99 (approximately ₹47,000). It features a built-in camera, artificial intelligence (AI), and a mouthwash jet designed to clean the spaces between teeth while brushing. This unique gadget has quickly grabbed attention online, with many users questioning whether a toothbrush actually needs a camera.
Captures 28 photos per second
The CameraJet was unveiled in Paris on September 1st, following six years of research and development. Dyson states that the system was created to tackle one of the toughest challenges in oral care: cleaning the gaps between teeth. The device’s key component is a 100,000-pixel macro camera embedded within the brush head. It captures 28 photos per second, while a machine-learning system identifies the gaps between the teeth.
As soon as a gap is detected, Dyson’s ‘Gap Optical Targeting System’ instantly fires a small jet of mouthwash. The company claims the jet activates within 100 milliseconds, allowing the toothbrush to perform both brushing and precise flossing simultaneously.
Connects via an app
The device connects to the MyDyson app via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Users can view a live feed of the inside of their mouth through the app and also receive brushing guidance. Users can track which parts of their mouth have been thoroughly cleaned via the map feature. Dyson states that the camera remains active only during live viewing or automatic jetting.
Addressing privacy concerns regarding the camera in such a personal device, the company has clarified that these images are neither recorded nor stored on the toothbrush or in the cloud. It is being sold in ‘Ceramic Ultra Blue’ and ‘Ceramic Pink’ color variants. Dyson is also developing a specially formulated low-foaming toothpaste and mouthwash for the device, as the company believes excessive foam could obstruct the camera’s view. It is currently unclear whether the product will be launched in India.
