Monsoon Alert: The monsoon continues to wreak havoc across the country. Continuous rainfall has created flood-like conditions in several states; low-lying areas are submerged, causing significant hardship for residents. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued a rainfall alert for 15 states today. According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in these 15 states, and people have been advised to exercise caution. An ‘Orange Alert’ for rain is in effect for Delhi-NCR, Gurugram, and several districts in Uttar Pradesh, prompting the issuance of public advisories. Warnings of hailstorms in some states have led to advice for farmers and fishermen to move to safer locations, while the general public is urged to avoid stepping out of their homes unnecessarily.
Which 15 states are under a heavy rain alert?
According to the IMD, warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms have been issued for 15 states: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. Gusty winds reaching speeds of 60 km/h are also expected during this period.
97 deaths due to floods in Assam
Several areas in Assam have been severely affected by floods. So far, 97 people have lost their lives, and over 168,000 people across 15 districts have been impacted. Both the central and state governments are actively engaged in assisting the affected population, and rescue operations are underway.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has also stepped forward to assist Assam’s flood victims. The Jharkhand government has contributed ₹3 crore to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
‘Work from Home’ advisory for Gurugram
Many upscale residential societies in Gurugram have turned into waterlogged pools; roads have transformed into ponds, and buses and cars were seen being swept away like toys. However, this is not the first time such scenes have been witnessed in Gurugram. Whenever it rains in Gurugram, the glitter of the high-rise city gets submerged in water. Residents and commuters traveling from Delhi and neighboring cities alike face significant inconvenience. An alert for heavy rain has been issued for Gurugram for the coming days, prompting the administration to release an advisory for the public.
What will the weather be like in Delhi?
Along with Gurugram, rain has disrupted movement in several parts of Delhi as well. Commuters faced major difficulties due to waterlogging in areas ranging from Safdarjung to RK Puram and Golf Club Road. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for the Delhi-NCR region for today as well. Warnings for rain and thunderstorms have been issued for Delhi today, with strong winds expected to blow at speeds of 40 to 50 km/h.

Uttar Pradesh: Warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms have been issued for Meerut, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, Mathura, Agra, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Chandauli, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Deoria, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur. Strong winds reaching speeds of 60 km/h are expected during this period.
Bihar: Warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms have been issued for Rohtas, Bhojpur, Buxar, Arwal, Aurangabad, Gaya, Patna, Samastipur, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Purnia, Katihar, Kishanganj, Khagaria, and Begusarai. Gusty winds blowing at speeds of 50 to 60 km/h are predicted.
Rajasthan: Warnings for light rain have been issued for Dausa, Phalodi, Shahpura, Bharatpur, Karauli, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Bhilwara, Ajmer, and Alwar. Madhya Pradesh – A ‘Yellow Alert’ for rain and thunderstorms has been issued for Bhopal, Balaghat, Shahdol, Khargone, Mandla, Dewas, Raisen, Panna, Damoh, Neemuch, Agar Malwa, Vidisha, Seoni, Khandwa, and Shivpuri.
Punjab – Warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms have been issued for Hoshiarpur, Chandigarh, Bathinda, Amritsar, Barnala, Pathankot, Faridkot, Ferozepur, and Ludhiana.
Jharkhand – An alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms has been issued for Bokaro, Simdega, Khunti, Deoghar, Hazaribagh, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Palamu, and Dhanbad. Stormy winds reaching speeds of 70 to 80 km/h are expected during this period.
West Bengal – Warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms have been issued for Howrah, Purba Bardhaman, Bankura, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Durgapur, Malda, and Kolkata.
Situation in Hill States –
Jammu & Kashmir – The monsoon has become a source of trouble in both mountainous and plain areas. Warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms have been issued today for Jammu, Poonch, Kulgam, Kathua, Shopian, Ganderbal, Bandipora, Rajouri, Muzaffarabad, and Kishtwar. A cloudburst occurred in the forests near the Khokhan-Kathohallan upper reaches of Shopian district. Following this, water and debris rushed downwards at high speed, causing local streams to overflow. Fortunately, no one was caught in the debris.
Uttarakhand – Debris and boulders fell onto the Kedarnath Highway near Tilwara due to a sudden landslide. Due to the abruptly worsening conditions, dozens of vehicles heading for the Kedarnath pilgrimage got stranded mid-route, causing difficulties for the travelers. In Kinnaur, National Highway-5 has been blocked due to a landslide. Meanwhile, Shimla is also facing havoc due to the rain; incessant downpours have turned roads into rivers, and the IMD has issued an alert for the region. Heavy rainfall is being reported in Nainital, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Almora.
