New Delhi: With the onset of September, monsoon activity has intensified across several states in the country. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an alert for heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds has been issued for 21 states today. Warnings regarding landslides have also been issued for hilly regions.
Low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal
A low-pressure area has formed over the Gangetic plains of West Bengal and the adjoining areas of north coastal Odisha, Jharkhand, and the northwest Bay of Bengal. It is likely to move in a west-northwest direction across north Odisha and Jharkhand over the next 48 hours. Under its influence, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at several places in Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, East Uttar Pradesh, and the Gangetic plains of West Bengal. Extremely heavy rainfall is also anticipated in some parts of Jharkhand.
Heavy rainfall warning for these states
The Meteorological Department has issued heavy rainfall warnings for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Assam, Tripura, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. There is a risk of heavy rainfall in North Indian states; rain accompanied by strong winds is forecast for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
According to the IMD’s forecast, heavy rainfall is expected in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi during September 3–4; in West Uttar Pradesh from September 3 to 5; and in East Uttar Pradesh on September 6–7. Rainfall is likely in East Madhya Pradesh on September 6–7; in Vidarbha on September 1 and September 6–7; and in Chhattisgarh from September 5 to 7. Heavy rainfall is expected in West Madhya Pradesh between September 2 and 7.
Northwest India
Regarding Northwest India, widespread rainfall is forecast at several places across Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Some areas may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. Eastern and Central India
Widespread rainfall is expected across Eastern India, covering the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. Rainfall is also likely in many parts of the Northeastern states, with alerts issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall in certain areas. In Central India, rainy spells are expected to continue across Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh. Meanwhile, widespread rainfall is likely in the Konkan-Goa region.
South India
Rainfall activity in South India is expected to remain relatively subdued over the coming week. While Kerala, coastal Karnataka, and Lakshadweep may experience widespread rainfall for a few days, only scattered rainfall is forecast for other regions.
Separately, a flash flood alert has been issued for 10 districts in Jharkhand due to heavy rainfall. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state is likely to witness overcast skies and heavy rain until September 5. As of Wednesday morning, a ‘Red Alert’ for very heavy rainfall has been issued for four districts, and an ‘Orange Alert’ for five districts.
