Weather Alert: Heavy rain is forecast for several areas across North, East, and Central India today (Wednesday). In Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, there is a risk of landslides and flash floods alongside the rainfall, while heavy to very heavy rain is expected in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Vidarbha. Additionally, rainfall is likely in Punjab, Haryana, UP, West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Sikkim, and the Northeastern states. Many parts of the country, including Delhi-NCR, faced difficulties following heavy rains on Tuesday; rain is expected in Delhi today as well.
Light rain likely in Delhi and Mumbai; cloudy skies in Lucknow
Light to moderate rain is possible in Delhi today (Wednesday). Meanwhile, the sky is likely to remain cloudy in Lucknow, the capital of UP, with a possibility of rain accompanied by thunderstorms later in the day. Cloudy skies are also forecast for Patna. Mumbai is likely to experience cloudy skies and light rain. Furthermore, thunderstorms are predicted for Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, with a possibility of lightning strikes.
Rain wreaks havoc from Assam to Gujarat
Heavy rainfall has severely disrupted normal life across the country, from East to West and North to Central India. While Assam, Odisha, and Gujarat are grappling with floods, hilly states like Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir are witnessing landslides and flash floods in various locations due to the heavy downpour.
Waterlogging reported in several areas following rain
Several North Indian states—including Delhi, UP, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan—experienced heavy rainfall last Tuesday. Waterlogging brought normal life to a standstill and disrupted traffic flow in many areas. Residents of Delhi-NCR also faced inconvenience due to waterlogging.
Landslides and flash floods close multiple roads in Himachal
Rainfall has compounded the difficulties faced by the hilly states. A total of 108 roads in Himachal Pradesh have been closed due to landslides and flash floods caused by heavy rainfall. The Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange alert’ for rain in five districts. Additionally, a risk of flash floods has been flagged for seven districts: Shimla, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Solan.
Cloudburst in Kulgam Adds to Woes
Landslides occurred in the Chamoli, Tehri, Uttarkashi, and Rudraprayag districts of Uttarakhand. The Kedarnath National Highway was blocked by debris between Kund and Kakra. The Sonprayag-Gaurikund highway is also closed, leading to the suspension of the Char Dham Yatra for two days. Meanwhile, a cloudburst occurred in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir; several houses in the Deosar area were submerged in water. An SDRF team successfully rescued people trapped inside one of the houses.
School Children Stranded Due to Waterlogging in Nagpur
Heavy rain also disrupted the situation in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on Tuesday, causing waterlogging across the city. School children became stranded in waterlogged areas in Nagpur’s Pratap Nagar, necessitating a rescue operation. Parents were furious over the incident, alleging that widespread digging for the ‘Smart City’ project has exacerbated the city’s waterlogging problems.
Death Toll Rises in Assam with 7 More Fatalities
The death toll from floods in Assam has reached 75 following the deaths of seven more people. However, the number of affected people across seven districts has dropped to 3.32 lakh. Meanwhile, four districts in Odisha are bearing the brunt of the rain. Continuous rainfall in Balasore has created flood-like conditions, with water levels on roads exceeding four feet. Many main roads and residential neighborhoods in the city are submerged, causing immense hardship for the residents.
