Weather Update: A spell of rainfall has resumed across several parts of the country due to the influence of Cyclone Arnab, which originated in the Bay of Bengal. Its impact is being felt from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in several states for September 25.
Heavy rains have commenced in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha after Cyclone Arnab made landfall along the coast of North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha. As a precautionary measure, schools in coastal areas have been closed, and residents have been relocated to safer locations. Meanwhile, a drop in temperature is being recorded in hilly states due to rain and snowfall; this trend may also affect the plains in the coming days.
Rainfall Alert for 11 States
The IMD has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. An ‘Orange Alert’ is in place for Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Maharashtra, while a ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Karnataka, and Meghalaya. People in these states have been advised to exercise caution due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall.
Heavy Rain in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha
Heavy rainfall is occurring in several areas of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha due to the cyclone’s impact. Thousands of people across both states have been moved to safer locations. Traffic has been disrupted in Odisha’s Malkangiri district due to waterlogging on the National Highway, and movement has also been affected by landslides in the Kalinga Valley.
Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh recorded 28 cm of rainfall in a 24-hour period, leading to waterlogging in several residential areas. NDRF teams have been deployed for relief and rescue operations. The weather in Delhi-NCR is shifting due to the impact of a cyclone. Since Friday morning, skies have remained overcast in several areas, and light rain is expected. Despite rising humidity levels, a drop in temperature may offer some relief from the sultry heat.
The effects of rain and snowfall in the hilly states are extending to the plains. Temperatures in Delhi and surrounding regions may see a further decline in the coming days.
Rain Spell in UP and Bihar
The cyclone’s impact is also visible in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with rain expected in several districts across both states. Significant rainfall has already been recorded in Unnao and Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh. In Bihar, heavy rain is likely in districts including Patna, Bhagalpur, Chhapra, and Purnia.
This rainfall could bring relief to areas in both states that have long suffered from a rainfall deficit, potentially improving monsoon statistics.
Temperature Drop in Hilly States
Rainfall and snowfall in higher altitudes continue across Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir, leading to a drop in temperatures in these hilly regions. The impact of this weather shift is now becoming visible in the plains of Punjab, Delhi, and surrounding areas.
