Europe Heatwave Deaths 2026: Europe, a region typically accustomed to cooler weather even during summer, is currently sweltering under such intense heat that it has sparked widespread alarm. In France, following record-breaking temperatures, a grim death toll is now emerging. According to a report by the news agency AFP, a funeral services organization stated that morgues in the capital, Paris, are running out of space due to overcrowding. On Monday, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu had to convene a crucial meeting to address the impact of the heatwave. Daily life has been severely disrupted, with many schools and famous tourist attractions forced to close. Scientists believe this extreme heat is linked to climate change.
Funeral Facilities Overwhelmed
Élisabeth Charrier, head of the National Funeral Federation, explained that while funeral facilities are usually 30 to 45 percent occupied during the summer, the figure has now surpassed 66 percent nationwide. She noted that morgues are completely full in many areas, particularly in major cities. Charrier told AFP, “The biggest problem is in the heart of Paris; the only two funeral facilities there have been completely full since last Friday.”
Charrier stated that the primary concern is the potential for long waits to secure a slot for cremation or a burial plot in a cemetery. She noted that cemetery staff cannot dig graves rapidly enough, and cremation slots fill up very quickly. French health officials reported on Sunday that since last Wednesday—when the country experienced record-breaking heat—there have been approximately 1,000 more deaths compared to the same period in previous months. They added that 85 percent of the deceased were aged 65 or older.
