A statement has been issued by the office of Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera. It has been said that aviation officials have been trying to contact the plane since it disappeared from the radar, but all efforts have failed so far. The plane took off at 9 am local time, and 51-year-old Chilima along with nine other people were on board.
Failed to land
Officials said that the President of Malawi has ordered regional and national forces to conduct immediate search and rescue operations to locate the plane. The President was going to Bahamas, but he has cancelled his trip. According to media reports, the plane failed to land at its destination Mzuzu. Mzuzu is located in the northern region of Malawi.
Accused of corruption
In 2022, Saulos Chilima was stripped of his powers after he was arrested and charged with corruption in a bribery scandal involving a British-Malawian businessman. Last month, a Malawi court dismissed the charges against Chilima after he appeared in court several times.
