US President Donald Trump is once again making headlines due to his social media posts. This time, he has hinted at renaming the US state of ‘New Mexico’ to ‘New America’. Trump shared a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, in which the word ‘Mexico’ is crossed out and replaced with ‘America’. In his post, Trump stated, “Many people have suggested renaming New Mexico to ‘New America’. It would be far more respectful and beautiful for the people of that magnificent state. Wow, I really like that!”
Post regarding renaming Hormuz
Prior to this, amidst escalating tensions with Iran, Trump had spoken about renaming the Strait of Hormuz. The US President posted asking why the Strait of Hormuz—now under US control—shouldn’t be renamed ‘Trump Strait’. Trump posted, “Now that the Strait of Hormuz is under US control, should it be renamed ‘Trump Strait’?” He added that, much like America, this strait would also become ‘hotter’ than before.
Earlier, Trump had shared a map of Hormuz, labeling it “NEW U.S. Territory.” The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime routes. It connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A significant portion of the global oil and gas supply passes through this route.
Renaming the Gulf of Mexico
It is worth noting that Donald Trump has previously taken steps to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario. Just a few days ago, amidst an ongoing trade war with Canada, he ordered that Lake Ontario be renamed ‘Lake America’. This is not the first time Trump has attempted to rename a body of water extending beyond US borders. Last year, Trump ordered that the Gulf of Mexico be renamed the ‘Gulf of America’. Following this, Apple and Google also changed the name on their maps in the United States. However, neither Mexico nor Canada accepted these name changes.
