Bengal Govt suspends 3 IPS officers over RG Kar rape murder case lapses

The West Bengal government has suspended 3 senior IPS officers over alleged lapses in the investigation of the RG Kar rape and murder case of 2024, officials said.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the state government will also initiate a departmental probe against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and two other officers for alleged misconduct during the handling of the case.

The case pertains to a trainee doctor who was found dead in August 2024 inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. Subsequent investigations revealed that she was raped and murdered by a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, triggering nationwide outrage and protests by doctors and healthcare workers demanding justice and stronger workplace safety.

According to official statements, the suspended officers are accused of mishandling the investigation, attempting to offer money to the victim’s family, and holding an unauthorised press briefing related to the case.

The Chief Minister clarified that the disciplinary action is separate from the ongoing criminal investigation, which is being conducted by the CBI under court supervision.

He further stated that the departmental inquiry will be led by the state home secretary under the guidance of the chief secretary.

The RG Kar case continues to remain one of the most sensitive criminal investigations in the state, drawing sustained public attention and political debate since the incident occurred in 2024.
