Youth Olympic Games 2026: Who is 15-year-old Tanvi Patri? She has brought glory to India by winning a silver medal at the Youth Olympics.

Youth Olympic Games 2026: 15-year-old Indian badminton player Tanvi Patri delivered an outstanding performance at the Youth Olympic Games held in Dakar, securing a silver medal. In the women’s singles final held on Thursday, Tanvi fought valiantly until the very end. Despite trailing 10-19 against China’s Zhang Yi Xin at one stage, she staged a remarkable comeback and saved five match points. However, she narrowly missed out on the gold medal. Zhang Yi Xin won the match 15-21, 21-13, 26-24 to claim the gold.

Tanvi Patri makes history, secures silver for India

Although Tanvi Patri, who hails from Odisha, lost the final, her performance won the hearts of millions of Indians. She became the first Indian female shuttler to reach the final of a badminton event at the Youth Olympic Games.

At just 15 years of age, Tanvi’s brilliant play, self-confidence, and fighting spirit against the reigning junior world champion point toward a very bright future. By winning the silver medal, she has brought honor to India on the international stage.

Tanvi shows her strength in the first game

The final was a fiercely contested battle. Tanvi got off to a fantastic start, winning the first game 21-15. However, China’s Zhang Yi Xin bounced back in the second game, winning it 21-13 to push the match into a decisive third game.

In the third game, the Chinese player took an early lead. At one point, Zhang was ahead 19-10, and it seemed almost certain that she would win the gold medal. But instead of giving up, Tanvi began scoring consecutive points, turning the match into an incredibly thrilling encounter. During this period, she saved five match points and earned three gold medal points of her own. However, she could not convert these opportunities into a victory and ended up losing the third game 26–24.

An Impressive Journey to the Final

On her path to the final, Tanvi Patri defeated several formidable opponents. In the group stage, she secured straight-game victories against Mexico’s Sara Gonzalez and Australia’s Smrithi Adepu. She then defeated South Korea’s Jeong Yu Chang to advance to the knockout rounds.

In the quarterfinals, Tanvi defeated Thailand’s Kungkaew Kakanik 21–17, 21–13. With this win, she became the first Indian woman to reach the semifinals of the Youth Olympic badminton competition.

In the semifinals, she faced Japan’s Yujuno Watanabe. In a match that lasted nearly 54 minutes, Tanvi delivered an outstanding performance, winning 21–14, 21–11, 21–19 to secure her spot in the final.

A Major Achievement at a Young Age

This achievement by Tanvi Patri is highly significant for Indian badminton. Although the gold medal slipped from her grasp, the way she fought back in the final—saving five match points—speaks volumes about her strong determination. Her performance could well serve as a new beacon of hope for the future of Indian badminton.
