Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that his country will “forever remain grateful” to US President Donald Trump for his “timely intervention” in helping secure a ceasefire with India following last year’s military conflict.
Speaking at a reception hosted by the US Embassy in Islamabad to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, Sharif described Pakistan-US relations as a “true and special relationship” spanning nearly eight decades.
Referring to the four-day conflict between India and Pakistan last year, triggered after the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, the Pakistani Prime Minister claimed that Trump played a decisive role in bringing an end to hostilities on May 10.
He credited Trump’s intervention with restoring peace in South Asia and preventing further escalation, saying he would be remembered as a “man of peace.”
India, however, has consistently rejected such claims, maintaining that the understanding to de-escalate tensions was reached directly between the two countries without any third-party mediation.
Shehbaz Sharif also praised Trump’s leadership style, saying it had brought energy and focus to US foreign policy and strengthened global engagement. He added that US leadership continues to inspire confidence while promoting peace, progress, and prosperity.
Highlighting bilateral relations, the Pakistani Prime Minister noted that the United States was among the first countries to recognise Pakistan after its independence in 1947. He said cooperation between the two nations spans security, counter-terrorism, trade, investment, agriculture, science, education, health, and energy.
Sharif further claimed that Pakistan is currently facilitating diplomatic contacts between the United States and Iran, and thanked Pakistan’s military leadership for supporting ongoing peace efforts in the region.
