A day after a massive fire ripped through a firecracker shop-cum-godown in Bhopal’s Halalpura area, thick smoke, charred debris and the lingering smell of gunpowder continued to dominate the scene as firefighters maintained a round-the-clock vigil on Friday.
Authorities have stationed three fire tenders at the site to prevent fresh flare-ups, as unexploded firecrackers buried beneath the debris could still ignite due to residual heat. The situation remains particularly sensitive because two petrol pumps are located just a few metres from the gutted structure.
The blaze erupted around 3:30 am on Bairagarh Road and triggered a series of powerful explosions, sending flames soaring nearly 80 feet into the air. Despite the intensity of the fire, no casualties were reported.
Firefighters battled the inferno for nearly three hours before bringing it under control. Officials said a major tragedy was averted as the incident occurred during the early morning hours when traffic and public movement were minimal.
The aftermath presents a grim picture, with twisted metal sheets, blackened walls and heaps of ash marking the remains of the firecracker warehouse. Shop owner Satish Soni, visibly shaken, said he was unaware of what caused the fire.
Residents living nearby recounted waking up to loud explosions and witnessing massive plumes of smoke rising into the sky. Fire personnel were forced to spray water from a safe distance as crackers continued exploding and flying in different directions during the operation.
Meanwhile, authorities have launched an inquiry into whether the firecracker shop-cum-godown was operating legally, particularly given its proximity to fuel stations. Police said action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Power supply in the area, which had been suspended as a precautionary measure during firefighting efforts, was restored later in the day after officials confirmed the situation was under control.
