Reports of a communal clash have emerged from Nepal’s Sunsari district, which borders India. According to reports, a dispute arose between two communities while they were holding separate events at the same location. The conflict stemmed from disagreements over the use of loudspeakers and the installation of religious flags, eventually escalating into violence. Security forces have been deployed and are working to bring the situation under control. One young man has died, and several others have reportedly been injured. Restrictions have been imposed in the area in response to the violence.
Restrictions to remain in force until further notice
One person died in the communal clash in Sunsari district, and several others—including security personnel—sustained injuries. In light of the clash, authorities have imposed indefinite restrictions in parts of the area starting Monday. According to the Sunsari District Administration Office, the restrictions came into effect at 7:00 AM and cover five market areas within the district, which is located in Koshi Province. These restrictions will remain in force until further notice. Under these measures, gatherings of more than four people, protests, public meetings, and sit-ins are prohibited in the affected areas.
Violence sparked by separate events
Police stated that the violence erupted on Sunday night in the Kaptanganj area of Devgunj Rural Municipality, where two religious communities were holding separate events. A confrontation broke out between them regarding the use of loudspeakers and the placement of religious flags. The verbal altercation escalated into violence, necessitating intervention by security personnel. Security forces opened fire while attempting to control the situation, resulting in the death of 24-year-old Om Prakash Mehta.
Violence in an area bordering India
Police reported that more than a dozen people, including security personnel, were injured in the clashes. The administration stated that violators of the restrictions could face a fine of 500 Nepalese rupees, imprisonment of up to one month, or both. It is worth noting that Sunsari, located in southeastern Nepal, shares a border with Bihar and serves as a crucial transit and commercial corridor between the two countries.
