Monsoon arrives in Delhi-NCR; alert issued for rain and storms across 12 states, including Maharashtra and UP; waterlogging reported in several areas of Mumbai.

An alert for rain and thunderstorms has been issued for 12 states today (Thursday), including Maharashtra, Bihar, and UP. A ‘Red Alert’ for rain is in effect for Palghar, Maharashtra, while an ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for Mumbai. Meanwhile, the monsoon has arrived in Delhi-NCR today, with heavy rain starting in several parts of the capital. Heavy rainfall is also expected in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and the northeastern states. The IMD has issued a ‘Red Alert’ for rain in Thane today, and heavy rain is likely in several areas of Mumbai; consequently, people have been urged not to step out of their homes unnecessarily.

Rain brings relief from the heat in Delhi

Additionally, heavy rains are lashing Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam. Rivers and streams are overflowing, and waterlogging is being reported in several areas. As mentioned, the monsoon has arrived in Delhi-NCR; dark clouds had been hovering over the capital since morning due to a change in weather, and heavy rain is currently falling in many parts of the city. Although the Meteorological Department had issued a monsoon alert starting July 4, the rain that occurred two days ago has already provided significant relief from the scorching heat.

Roads submerged in Mumbai’s Bandra and Juhu areas

Maharashtra is facing the worst situation; roads across Mumbai, including Bandra and Juhu, are submerged in water. Trees are falling amidst the continuous downpour. Subways have had to be closed due to severe waterlogging, forcing people to remain indoors. In Vasai-Virar, heavy rains caused drains to overflow, and two cars were swept away by the water like toys. Fortunately, the occupants managed to jump out and save their lives, escaping injury, though the continuous rain has caused significant damage in the area.

Rainwater flooded the Andheri subway

It is worth noting that rain has been continuing in Mumbai since last night. Rainfall of 134 mm was recorded in Mumbai city, 164 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 149 mm in the western suburbs. Waterlogging at Mumbai’s Andheri Subway around 4 AM had halted traffic temporarily, but movement has since resumed as the water receded. While water has accumulated on a section of the road in the King’s Circle area, traffic remains unaffected; however, low-lying areas in Kurla are experiencing waterlogging. Suburban train services are operating normally.

Waterlogging in Low-Lying Areas of Thane

Following heavy rainfall, waterlogging has also been reported in the low-lying areas of Thane. Water levels on the roads have reached 2 to 3 feet, causing vehicles to stall mid-road and resulting in traffic jams. Heavy rainfall was recorded across Mumbai on Wednesday as well.
