Big news for 74,000 teachers in Chhattisgarh! Proposal to allow pursuing B.Ed and bridge courses while employed.

Chhattisgarh Teachers’ B.Ed. Bridge Course: The path to obtaining a B.Ed. degree while remaining employed could become easier for approximately 74,000 teachers working in the state’s government schools. A proposal to launch a B.Ed. bridge course for in-service teachers through an open university was put forward during an SCERT meeting. According to the proposal, the majority of the coursework would be conducted online, eliminating the need for teachers to attend physical classes for extended periods.

There are approximately 190,000 teachers employed in the state across classes 1 to 12. Of these, around 74,000—comprising assistant teachers, teachers, and lecturers—do not hold a B.Ed. degree. They would benefit if this proposal is implemented. However, the scheme is currently only at the proposal stage, and the operational procedures have yet to be finalized.

Time Constraints in Regular Courses

Pursuing a standard two-year B.Ed. course is difficult for in-service teachers. It is not feasible for them to quit their jobs or take extended leave to study. Furthermore, university seats are limited. Consequently, the bridge course option has emerged as a way to complete the training within a shorter timeframe. This initiative is also being linked to the changes taking place under the National Education Policy. Preparations are underway to launch the proposed system starting this academic session.

Proposal to Establish Centers in 146 Development Blocks

Teachers’ associations have written to the Education Secretary, DPI, and SCERT, suggesting that this course be conducted through Pandit Sundarlal Sharma Open University. The organization has demanded the establishment of study and facilitation centers across the state’s 146 development blocks. The proposal suggests selecting five well-equipped higher secondary schools for each center and enrolling approximately 100 teachers per center. The association has also recommended providing study materials free of cost or at a nominal fee and conducting mandatory 20-day contact classes during holidays.
