IMD Weather Update: Heavy rainfall is occurring as the monsoon becomes active across the central and northern parts of the country. According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rain is likely today in 17 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Delhi-NCR. A new weather system forming over the Bay of Bengal is driving this heavy rainfall across North and Central India, with Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh bearing the brunt of it. Flood-like conditions prevail in over 14 districts of UP; Prayagraj, Varanasi, Barabanki, Sonbhadra, and Mirzapur appear to be the most affected. Meanwhile, traffic has been disrupted in several locations across Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh due to landslides. The IMD forecasts heavy rainfall throughout the week.
Alert for these states on August 24
The Meteorological Department predicts heavy rainfall throughout the day on August 24 across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, West Bengal, Odisha, Gujarat, and Delhi-NCR. Residents in hilly states have been advised to exercise caution due to the risk of landslides; notably, a section of the Pathankot-Mandi National Highway caved in due to heavy rain, disrupting traffic. Similar conditions in Uttarakhand have also prompted the issuance of an alert.
Heavy rain in Madhya Pradesh
Heavy rainfall continues in Madhya Pradesh. According to the Meteorological Department, a rain alert has been issued for 22 districts on Monday. Heavy rain is likely today in Narmadapuram, Betul, Chhindwara, Pandhurna, Narsinghpur, Damoh, Seoni, Jabalpur, Vidisha, Sagar, Raisen, and Mandla. Various districts across Uttar Pradesh have been experiencing heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. Nineteen districts—including Prayagraj, Barabanki, Varanasi, Sonbhadra, and Mirzapur—appear to be the most affected, with flood-like conditions prevailing. In parts of Barabanki city, waterlogging has necessitated the use of boats to evacuate residents. Meanwhile, the water level of the Ganges has risen rapidly in Prayagraj and Varanasi following the heavy downpour; more than 80 ghats (riverfront steps) in Varanasi are currently submerged. Consequently, people living along the riverbanks have been advised to exercise caution. The Meteorological Department has issued a rainfall alert for today (Monday) for several districts, including Varanasi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Aligarh, Moradabad, Badaun, Etawah, Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Sonbhadra, and Mathura. Good rainfall is expected throughout the day across the state, from eastern to western Uttar Pradesh.

Significant rainfall is likely in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, and Rajasthan between August 24 and 27.
Heavy rain is expected in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat over the next three to four days.
Rainfall is also likely in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir between August 24 and 28.
According to the Meteorological Department, the impact of the monsoon may also be observed in South India between August 24 and 26.
Weather Shift in Delhi-NCR
Changes in weather conditions are expected in the Delhi-NCR region over the coming days, with a likelihood of rain today as well. Parts of Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram have received good rainfall over the past two days, leading to a drop in temperature and a reduction in humid heat; mornings and nights have remained relatively comfortable. Similarly, rain is likely on August 24 in the Uttarakhand districts of Rishikesh, Haridwar, Chamoli, Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, and Uttarkashi. Good rainfall is also anticipated in Jammu & Kashmir today. Consequently, residents of these hilly states have been advised to exercise caution.
