PhonePe has launched a new UPI service for feature phones. The aim of this feature is to extend the convenience of digital payments beyond smartphones. With this service, users can access essential UPI features on compatible feature phones. According to the company, more devices are expected to gain support for this service in the coming months. This launch opens up new digital payment options for users who rely on feature phones for their daily communication needs.
PhonePe’s Internet-free UPI Payment Service
PhonePe announced that its UPI 123Pay service is now available on supported feature phones across India. This service functions without an internet connection, processing transactions via SMS. It includes features such as money transfers and merchant payments. It has been designed to work even in areas with limited 2G connectivity, helping to bring UPI services to over 200 million feature phone users in India.
HMD has confirmed that PhonePe UPI 123Pay support is available on the HMD 105 2G, HMD 110 2G, Nokia 105 Classic, Nokia 105 Single SIM, Nokia 105 Dual SIM, Nokia 106, and Nokia 123 Shield. Other HMD and Nokia models are expected to receive support in the future. Currently, PhonePe UPI 123Pay is available on select feature phones from HMD, Nokia, Lava International, and Itel Mobile.
Easy Setup Process
To assist users in setting up the service, PhonePe is providing an AI-based voice helpline. It supports English and 12 Indian languages, offering a step-by-step activation guide and answers to common questions regarding UPI. Users can set up the service using the PhonePe app pre-installed on compatible feature phones; they simply need to accept the terms and conditions to get started. Next, they will need to select their bank, enter the last six digits of their debit card along with its expiry date, and then set up a UPI PIN.
Once registration is complete, users can make payments to a contact, mobile number, or UPI ID. Feature phones equipped with a camera will also offer the facility to scan QR codes. Users will need to verify the recipient’s details, enter the amount, input their UPI PIN, and confirm the payment.
